Each October, downtown Galena’s Main Street fills with floats, marching bands, costumed characters and crowds of spectators for the Galena Halloween Parade & Festival. The 2026 edition is the 46th annual parade, hosted by the Galena Area Chamber of Commerce. Many guests make a full weekend of it: a day of shopping and dining in the historic district, the parade in the evening, and a home base to return to afterward.

Friday, October 30

Arrive, Settle In, Meet Galena After Dark

  • 4:00 p.m.
    Check in and unwind. Drop the bags, fire up the fireplace or hot tub if your home has one, and enjoy the house before the weekend picks up.
  • Dinner
    Log Cabin Steakhouse. A historic downtown supper club known for steaks and flaming cocktails, a fitting first night in town.
  • Evening
    Take a ghost walk. Haunted Galena Tour Company leads a 90-minute costumed-guide walking tour of the town’s hauntings and folklore. Tickets are required, so check tour times and book ahead.

Saturday, October 31 · Parade Day

Slow Morning, Main Street, Then the Parade

  • Morning
    Coffee on Main Street. Start at Big Bill’s Sandwich Shop & Coffee Bar, then wander a street of more than 125 shops and restaurants in original 1800s buildings, with no chain stores.
  • Midday
    Tour the U.S. Grant Home. Step inside the house Galena presented to General Grant in 1865, now a state historic site with many original furnishings. Confirm current hours before you go. Lunch afterward at Green Street Tavern in the historic DeSoto House Hotel.
  • Afternoon
    Try a tasting or a distillery tour. Blaum Bros. Distilling offers behind-the-scenes tours, and downtown’s tasting rooms make an easy stop between shops.
  • By 3:00 p.m.
    Get your car off Main Street. Any vehicle left there after 3 p.m. will be towed.
  • 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
    Ride the shuttle downtown. Shuttles leave the Walmart lot starting at 3:30, and the last one heads downtown at 5:30. There is no shuttle during the parade.
  • Early dinner
    Eat before the crowds close in. Main Street closes to traffic at 6 p.m., so plan dinner for before then, then claim your spot along the route.
  • 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
    The Halloween Parade. Floats, marching bands and costumed characters roll down Main Street. Bring a small folding chair (none on Main Street before 3 p.m.) and leave the glass bottles behind.
  • After 8:00
    Ride home and warm up. Return shuttles run until about 9:15 p.m., dropping off at the Walmart lot. Back at the house, a hot tub or fire pit is the right finish.

Sunday, November 1

Check Out, Then Take the Scenic Way Home

  • Morning
    Sleep in and take your time. Checkout is at 11 a.m., so there is no rush to be anywhere first thing.
  • After checkout
    Hike Horseshoe Mound Preserve. A short drive outside town, it’s a hiking spot with views of Galena and the rolling hills of the Driftless region.
  • Afternoon
    Head out to the Mississippi River bluffs. Chestnut Mountain Resort overlooks the river, with chairlift rides and panoramic views from The Summit Food & Spirits. Check hours before you go. Timmerman’s Supper Club, also on the river bluffs, is another option if you’re staying for dinner.

Shuttle

  • Shuttles run from the Walmart parking lot (near the Garden Center) to downtown starting at 3:30 p.m.
  • Fare is $5 per person for ages 6 and up; round-trip riders receive wristbands
  • Last outbound shuttle: 5:30 p.m.
  • No shuttle service during the parade
  • Return shuttles run until about 9:15 p.m.
  • Overflow parking: Tractor Supply and Medical Associates lots

Parking & Road Closures

  • The City of Galena parking lot is closed to public parking
  • Cars must be off Main Street by 3 p.m. or will be towed; Main Street closes to traffic at 6 p.m.
  • Cars parked on Water Street after 3 p.m. cannot move until the parade ends
  • No RV parking downtown
  • Several other downtown streets have no-parking restrictions starting at 10 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.
