Why families spend Thanksgiving in Galena
Someone always ends up hosting Thanksgiving: cleaning the house, finding beds for everyone, cooking for two days and doing dishes for one. Renting a home in Galena takes that off one person’s plate. Everyone arrives on Wednesday, settles into their own bedroom, and the kitchen and the table belong to the whole group.
Galena is about three hours from Chicago, close enough for a Wednesday afternoon drive and far enough to feel like you’ve left. By late November the leaves are down, the tourist crowds of October have thinned, and the town settles into a quieter, early-holiday pace. The draw isn’t a festival. It’s four days with the people you came with.
And you don’t have to cook. Eagle Ridge Resort, a few minutes from most of our homes in The Galena Territory, serves a Thanksgiving buffet and makes a complete turkey dinner to go. Order it and the house smells like Thanksgiving without anyone spending the morning basting.
Who a Galena Thanksgiving works for
- Multi-generational families. Grandparents get a quiet bedroom, the kids get space to run around, and everyone eats together.
- Families meeting in the middle. Siblings coming from Chicago, the suburbs, Iowa and Wisconsin can all make it to Galena in a few hours.
- Friendsgiving groups. A 4- or 5-bedroom home fits several couples, with a big table and a hot tub at select homes.

A realistic Wednesday-to-Sunday plan

Wednesday: arrive and stock up
Check-in is 4 p.m. Do the big grocery run on the way in; Wednesday is the day to have everything you need for Thursday. Easy dinner at the house, then let everyone claim a bedroom.
Thursday: Thanksgiving
Slow morning and a parade on TV. Then cook together in the house’s kitchen, pick up the Eagle Ridge turkey dinner (pickup is noon to 5 p.m.), or head to the Eagle Ridge buffet.
Friday: get outside, then Main Street
Walk off dinner with a morning hike or a drive through the hills. In the afternoon, head downtown for early holiday shopping on historic Main Street, which is full of independent shops. Leftovers for dinner.
Saturday and Sunday: slow down
Board games, a fire at homes with a fireplace, maybe a winery or brewery tasting room downtown. Checkout is 11 a.m. Sunday. If you’d rather miss the Sunday rush on the roads, a Wednesday-to-Saturday stay meets the minimum too.

Three ways to do Thanksgiving dinner in Galena
Eagle Ridge turkey dinner, carryout or delivery
Our favorite option, and the best value we know of. Eagle Ridge’s complete Thanksgiving dinner feeds roughly 10 people, and it even comes delivered by Eagle Ridge’s “pilgrims.”
- Whole turkey meal, $300: a 12–14 lb. whole turkey with the full spread
- Turkey breast meal, $330: a 10 lb. turkey breast with the full spread
- Included: autumn salad, maple-glazed carrots and Brussels sprouts, green bean casserole, brown butter mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, cranberry-orange relish, sage and brioche stuffing, dinner rolls and butter, two pumpkin pies and whipped cream
- Pickup: noon to 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Woodlands Lounge. Delivery is by reservation too.

That works out to about $30 a person. Extra sides and a second turkey can be added. Order early; it’s by reservation.

A good pick if your group wants a sit-down meal and zero cleanup.
Cook it yourselves at the house
Our homes come with full kitchens, and for a lot of families, cooking together is the whole point. Our tip: shop on your way in Wednesday rather than counting on Thursday, and bring anything special from home, like a favorite roasting pan or the family gravy boat. If you’re planning to roast a big bird, email us before you arrive and we’ll tell you what’s in that home’s kitchen.

Getting to Galena over Thanksgiving
- Leave early Wednesday if you can. The day before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and getting out of Chicago mid-afternoon takes patience.
- Watch the forecast. Late November in northwest Illinois can bring the first snow or icy mornings. Roads in and around The Galena Territory are hilly and winding, so give yourself daylight for the drive in.
- Plan your Sunday. Checkout is 11 a.m. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is another heavy travel day; leaving right after checkout, or staying Wednesday to Saturday instead, helps.

Where to stay in Galena for Thanksgiving
Most of our homes are in The Galena Territory, a wooded resort community east of downtown Galena, and only a few minutes from Eagle Ridge. That’s handy for Thanksgiving: the buffet is close, and so is the turkey pickup. It’s not downtown, though. If walking to Main Street matters most, a downtown inn or rental may suit you better.

Seats at the table
Bedrooms tell you who can sleep over; dining seats tell you who can eat together. For Thanksgiving, check the table size as closely as the bedroom count. If you’re not sure, ask us.
Bathrooms for a crowd
Four days with a full house goes smoother when there’s more than one shower. For groups of eight or more, look for a bathroom per bedroom.
Somewhere to spread out
A second living area or a game room gives the kids and the football fans their own space. Select homes have game rooms or finished lower levels.
A reason to go outside
